The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao
Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, this is the first novel by Junot Diaz, although he is well known for short stories. This book has come as a bit of a suprise. The style is unusual but once started it is a difficult book to put down. It is an immigrant family saga set in New York and the Dominican Republic. Well worth a look.
The Spare Room - Helen lovingly prepares her spare room for her friend Nicola. She is coming to visit for three weeks, to receive treatment she believes will cure her cancer. Very measured, thoughtful writing.
The Enchantress Of Florence - An author who needs no introduction. The story of a woman attempting to command her own destiny in a man's world.
Involuntary Witness - All of us have been reading Euro crime and this one stands out as having everything we really like with this type of writing. Set in Italy, it has strong characters, an unusual plot and no red herrings. Great legal thriller!

The Good Parents
London, Joan
Maya de Jong, an eighteen-year-old country girl, moves to Melbourne where she falls under the spell of her boss. When her parents come to stay they are told she has gone away, with no idea where or for how long. As they wait in Melbourne for news, scenes from their own youth are brought into focus - the choices they made and the dreams they had. This is an evocative and beautifully written novel of contemporary Australia. A staff favourite this year.
Samurai Kids Book 1: White Crane
Fussell, Sandy; Nest James, Rhian
The first in an exciting new series for boys and girls that celebrates differences. Funny, action-packed tale of disabled kids training to be Samurai's in feudal Japan. Sounds unlikely, but very enjoyable. For kids aged between 10-12.
